Now playing at the Audio Visual Hijab

My new roommate Elaine arrived yesterday, and over dinner I learned the phrase she gives to the combination of accessories which acts as a buffer for women in the streets of Ramallah: headphones and sunglasses. She called it the audio-visual hijab, the head-covering replacement for western women. I gave it a try this evening on the way to a concert at the Danish House, and it worked swell.

Especially when used to pipe The Wailin' Jennys into my ears. I had a delightful audial reunion with this band last weekend while driving in New England, when A Prairie Home Companion came on. Garrison Keillor is not one of the voices of public radio I pursue via podcast in Ramallah, and this hokiest of all hokey episodes reminded me why. But the show was saved when the Wailin' Jennys came on and sang "Prairie Town" in beautiful close harmonies. Here is the hijab (and me singing along with one of the Jennys), and here is the song.

  1. I love the idea of you listening to a song so incongruous to your environment :-)
