Today the eleventh grade held a press conference activity, in which four world leaders were questioned on their stance on climate change by a well-informed press corps. Students heard speeches by these leaders delivered on Saturday/Monday and talked in groups about how to question the leaders on their positions and willingness to make sacrifices in other areas of domestic policy.
The leaders were: Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General, Barack Obama, US President, Narendra Modi, PM of India, and Mohamed Nasheed, President of the Maldives.
Press teams came to cover the event from : Palestine, The Maldives, a British publication in the UK, and a business-interest publication in India.
There were great questions, based neatly on text, and now the journalists will prepare a video presentation for their constituents on what the Paris Climate Talks outcomes mean for them.
From the Maldives team:
Mr. Obama, the US has only taken in 10,000 Syrian refugees. Are you prepared to absorb the nearly half a million refugees that would be driven to foreign shores if the Maldives were overtaken by rising sea levels?
From the India Team:
Mr. Moon: Most of the UN countries make significant money off oil and other fossil fuels. Don't you think that if fossil fuel consumption went down, the very funds these countries have pledged to create clean energy would be depleted because their economies would shrink?
From the Palestine team:
Mr. Moon, what needs to happen at these talks in order to improve transparency on all sides?
